Who Would Believe it...

Who would believe that we finally have a website....it is a wish coming true. Guys...we have a formal website...its www.mandaiunited.com.

The website will serve as a formal site for announcements and news, whereas mandaiunited.blogspot.com will serve as an avenue for me to share my personal thoughts and feelings. For those of you who prefer not to know about my personal views, you can just log in to the formal website.

I have to thank Peter for bringing this Club a notch forward. Thank you very much.

Who would have believe it....

It's Official...

It is official...we are OUT of the ESPZEN League for next season. This has been a truly sad and difficult decision for me, as I believe that playing in the ESPZEN league was a stepping stone in the right direction. However, due to the lack of funds and lack of committed players, the decision was made, after consultation with the Team Captain, Coach and Team Manager that it would be better to train more and recruit more players and add depth to the squad.

I believe strongly that we are a good team, because we are guided by a good coach and supported by a totally committed individual. The players have matured into thinking footballers, applying football sense on the pitch rather than running about aimlessly. This was only achieved through training and experiencing more matches.

By participating in ESPZEN League, regardless of the final outcome, the players have experienced the meaning of teamwork, team spirit and self belief. The players have rallied together towards one goal, that is, the ESPZEN Weekend Morning League Championship. Although it is just a social league, the fact that we are contenders for the title has truly motivated many of the players to give their best and their utmost support. From my experience as the President of the Club for the past few years, I doubt the players would give the same support if we were not within contention of the title.

Where lies our direction now?? The plan was to have more training sessions, maybe 3 times a week, but alas. we are unable to get ten players to attend a training session. We should have at least have 16 players per session for the training to be useful. Can we go on our current players? Most of them are very young. Players like Raimi, Fariq, Tommy and a few others have yet to serve NS. Others have work commitments that prevent them from coming for training.

Even if we do train 3 times a week, players would not get motivated as there are no matches to be played, since we are out of the league. So, we play regular friendly matches. Who is going to fund the matches? Can we create a pool? How many of our players are willing to contribute regularly towards the club. Some of our players are finacially constraint...

My words may be harsh and you may say im pessimistic. Hopefully it would make you take a more active involvement in the affairs of the club. What do i mean by a more active involvement??

It means contibuting to the club...other than being a player. Recruiting committed players, attending trainings regularly, helping out with the kit, bringing refreshments, getting sponsorship, maintaining web site, taking pictures...etc
Only then can we take the step forward.

so my dear teammates, start thinking and start the ball rolling....and lets step out of the league with a bang...by WINNING THE ESPZEN WEEKEND MORNING LEAGUE!!!

Training Update...Thursday, 28 July 2005

Training was cancelled today as I was had to attend a workshop and it ended at 6.30 pm. There was nobody available to bring the training equipment to the field, although Tommy volunteered. However, after much thought, I decided to cancel it as I don't think many would turn up for training and no Goalkeepers were available as Botak was not free today.

Match Update...24 July vs Numero Uno

It was a day to remember. It was a show of commitment from the team. It was a display of loyalty to the club. It was totally a day to remember...

The day before, I received an sms from Reza, saying he would not be abe to make it as he was on duty. It was already bad that Richard was overseas. Guy was uncontactable and I assumed that he wont make it. Then early in the morning Yazid sms me saying that his aunt just passed away. Naj was with his parents in JB. Yus had earlier told me that he wont play if the venue was in Sentosa. I was really hoping that Nigerians would turn up....cos I have a bad feeling that we wont have enough players.

I was spot on about my feelings. Botak, Wak, Zali and me arrived at the field at about 0830hrs. It was a surpise to see Francis there...he was alone and therefore I knew that the team was in trouble. We had only 4 players. Faizal came soon after, with Fariq, Raimi and Fuad tagging along. It was a positive sign...as the day before I heard Raimi and Fuad were not coming. We have only 8 now. at least we wont be penalised for a walkover. At the same time, Guy sms me and said he couldnt make it. I trust he is committed to the team and I guess he had something important to attend to. At least he has the courtesy to call.

Tommy arrived soon after. We now have 9. I could see our opponents arriving in numbers. I decided to keep to myself. I told myself whatever the outcome is, I would give my best today. I called Botak and decided to help him in his warming up. Then out of the blue, Yus arrived with Saw. We now have 11, but not the strongest 11. But at least we would give our best.

I told the team to just play to Wak's instructions. And play we did......

Everyone put their hearts and soul to the game. Saw who was playing in his debut, was jittery at first but he marked his man out of the game. Everybody was determined to win...and it seemed that our luck has changed when Peter arrived with Kok Leong. It really boosted my morale...

In the end..who would have thought that we would beat Numero Uno 4-0. The team with the reputation of not losing and at the top of the table. We had no star player, and we dont need one. All we need are committed and humble individuals, who follows instructions and play as a team. If we continue to do that, then more success will follow.

Who would have thought that Botak could be Man of the Match....

Announcement - Match

Match on Sunday will be played at Sentosa instead of Katong. Please be there by 8.15 a.m.

Absentees: Richard (overseas).

Do take note that even if it rains, we are still required to be at the pitch. Therefore, if there is a downpour, players will wait at Harbourfront and I will inform of the changes.

Training Update.. Thursday, 21 July 2005

I was surprised by the number of players who committed themselves to training today. However, it was difficult for Wak to conduct a proper tactical training as he need about 16 players to have demonstrate the tactical movements.

Attendees: Rafi, Botak, Faizal, Fariq, Raimi, Yus, Saw, Francis, Zul, Tommy, Yazid, Naj.

It was really a nice gesture for Yazid and Naj to turn up even they were unable to train. It shows team spirit and support for the team.

We had a meeting and discussed the feasibility of playing for ESPZEN Weekend Morning League Season 2. After getting feedback from the players, we have decided not to particiapte in the tournament but decided instead to focus on team development and training. Faizal has stepped forward as a leader and insisted that we get committed players and train more frequently. I just hope that the other have the same mindset as him.

On the way back, I met with Boy Jasni...he is no longer playing for any club and he says that there are many players in Yishun whom he can recommend to me. He would be an asset to the team, provided Wak would be around to discipline him. He was a skilful footballer and to some, was even better than Rafi Ali, but alas, he made some bad choices in his life. I hope he learns from his past mistakes and lead a new life.

Announcement

Dear Players

Training session as usual on Thursday, 21 July at Farrer Park field. Be there by 5.30 pm. Do inform me if you are unable to attend. We will cancel the training if there is not more than 10 players available. Also bring your match fees for the past 2 matches. I will start collecting it from tomorrow onwards.

With effect from the next match, all players are required to settle the match fees prior to the match. We will only issue the jerseys to the players after the match fees have been paid. If that player is not fielded for the duration of the match, his match fees will be refunded. If a player has played more than 25 minutes of match time, his money will not be refunded. This policy comes into place as a result of players who make no attempt at all to contribute to the match fees, even after being allowed to play. Having said that, the policy for a win still apply. If we win a match, the money will be pooled for the next match. Another bonus is given to the man of the match. The man of the match will be given a fee waiver for that match.

The following rule applies to all players. With effect from today, the club will not be paying any fees to any of the players. Every player will be treated equally. Until the day comes when we are financially sound, each player will have to pay if they want to play in the league.

BTW....it costs less than a pack of cigarettes....

If you have any disagreement regarding the above policy, do feel free to post it here.. see u on thursday...cheers

Fees collection

Dear players

Due to the two draws against Ale Vasco, it is only right for every player playing in the match to pay for the game fees. Do take note that Peter will only sponsor the team for a win.

As such every player will need to pay $5 for students and $10 for those who are working. Players who played only 5 minutes for the match are not required to pay for the fees. I require every player to stick to this agreement and not try to shun away of their responsbility to the club.

Peter will need the money as soon as possible and thus I hope everyone will cooperate with him regarding this matter.

PS - I have looked into the minor discontentment within the squad on a few matters regarding the club and will make my announcement at a later date.

Important Notice

All players take note that there will NOT be any training this Thursday, 14 July 2005. This is due to the fact that many of our players are unavailable to attend on that day.

Also, our upcoming match against Messinah Greats has been postponed to a later date as they have a shortage of players. Therefore have a good rest this weekend and do check the ESPZEN website for changes.

Match Update...10 July 2005 vs Ale Vasco

Today was the only day that I was free enough to update my blog. We met Ale Vasco again in a return match. We wanted to prove that we were a better side.

Only 14 players turned up for the match. We did not have any goalkeeper. Luckily, Sazali brought his friend, Adi. As usual we had our two Nigerians.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw. Again, one of the goal was due to a goalkeeping mistake, while the other was a bad mistake by me. I cleared the ball and it hit Reza's shoulder and rebounded past the goalkeeper. However my frustration was not because of the goalkeeping error but of what our 'star player' did.

I shall not name the particular player but his performance on that day was truly selfish and affected the morale of the team. He did notplay to his role as a midfielder and at many times prefer to run with the ball and not utilise the other able players. Imagine the fact that we were attacking most of the time but were unable to score any more goals. Furthermore, look at the goals the opponent scored. It was totally given away on a silver platter by us.

I was fuming mad after the match ended and kept to myself. Many of the players did not want to say anything to that particular player because he scored a truly great goal and he is ..a very good player. But obviously, the morale was low. Yet the player seemed oblivious as to what he had done. His display on the field...in my opinion...cost us the game. By failing to play to instruction and failing to work as a team when he clearly has the chance and ability to do so, he showed indisciplined on the field.

I will clearly take action on this player. No player is above the team. I thus seek your support and hope that you would continue to give your best as you did during the last 2 matches.

Training Update...Thursday, 7 July 2005

It was a big contrast from the previous training session. Last week,we had 23 players turning up for training. Today, only 10 players attended the training.

Attendees: Rafi, Botak, Fuad, Fariq, Raimi, Sazali, Richard, Guy, Francis + 2 Nigerians.

At times like this I really wonder whether it was a waste of time to spend money on taxi fare to transport the training equipment, only to have a few turning up. I know most of the players are working or studying, but the level of commitment is evident. Not all of the players absent are working or having classes at that time. Richard, Guy,Botak, Sazali, Fuad and me are also working and rush to attend the training sessions. Though we too are tired from work,we do our best to make it.

We get frustrated when the coach or the senior players shout at us when we make mistakes on the field. Yet, we do not understand that it could have been avoided if we have attended the training sessions. If we take a look at our past matches,we can clearly say that we lost because of our inexperience. We know we can play football and we are not a bad side, but yet we do not attend training sessions to gain more experience and learn more about the game. Remember, it takes 11 players to play the game. If any one does not perform, the team will break down.

To those who have informed me ealier regarding their absence from training, I truly appreciate it. To those who did not attend and did not inform me, I hope you would be more considerate to me and the others.

Anyway, thanks to all who turned up. We really learnt a lot on that day.

A Story to tell......

For the youngsters to ponder upon...my story..

When I was in primary school..I was not selected as part of the school team. I couldn't kick properly and was not part of the popular boys in school. Though I could have gone to the Milo Soccer School at Farrer Park on Sundays, I was told by my parents to leave Sundays for religious class.

When I was in secondary school, there was a time when I was not allowed to play with the other boys cos I was not good enough. Nobody wanted me on their team. At that time, I was invited by a few friends to join a void deck soccer team called United Soccerites.

In a few years, I developed into a better player. I was in the first eleven of the United Soccerites void deck team. At the same time, my father brought me to Geylang International U-16 team. I met many good players there...the training was rigourous..I was part of the team..but I never was in the first eleven. In fact, I cant recall playing in a competitive match, only friendlies. Nevertheless, I accepted the fact that the other players were definitely better than me. The squad comprised of national youth players from Jin Tai and Boys Town. Due to playing with them, in Sec. 4, I was selected into the school team and was always in the first eleven.

I did well for my O levels. I gave the same determination for my studies as I had for my football. I went to Ngee Ann Polytechnic to pusue an engineering diploma. I was recruited for my department team. We had to buy our own jerseys. We won the championship 3 years in a row. But again, I was just a fringe player. In my final year, I was made the captain of the team. Though we did not win anything that year, I was proud to be captain. Again, I was not accepted into the Inter-Varsity team. Nevertheless, I never gave up. At that same period, I was training with the Milo U-18 team at Mountbatten. Most of the players were national youth players. Again, I was just part of the reserves. Yet, I never complained.

When I was serving my national service, I was recruited to play for my camp,Jalan Bahar Camp. We had the best players in the force at that time. Again,I was not in the first eleven, but I was recognised as part of the team. Here I learn that a team is not the eleven players, but all the players registered for the tournament. I did enjoy my time there..and enjoyed my football there...

After I ROD, I trained with Admiralty FC. It was a good team. Ex national and national youth squad players were there. Wak Ansari was the coach. I was hoping to be playing for them, but when it comes to football, family ties does not apply. I was greatly disappointed about this...but I never gave up.

I trained with them..knowing that I would never play for them...I trained just because I wanted to improve myself as a footballer. It was here that I gained football intelligence, learning about the tactical side of football. My skills improved, so as my understanding of the game. I never made it into Admiralty FC.

A few years later, I met an old acquaintance who was with United Soccerites. He said he had already registered the team as Mandai United Sports Club. He told me to be an official of the team.

Years passed and here I am being President of the club. Here,I can play whenever I want, in which ever position I choose and what ever jersey number I like. Yet, I do not do that...because i learn to accept that the team must come first. That's why the coach decides who plays.

The point I am trying to make is this...it takes years for me to finally be in the first eleven. It takes hard work and long training hours. If you want to be in the first eleven, then work hard and give your best during training. Always keep learning and finally you would be there.

Remember, the disciplined players will always improve, and the ill-disciplined ones will always self-destruct themselves. Such is the law of the universe. Be patient..Be humble and keep learning...Be part of the team...Keep your emotions in check...and one day you will reach your goal.

Its a tough job

A manager's job is never an easy one. Here I face great difficulty in appeasing the players who did not get to play in the competition.

Let us get our objective straight. What is our objective? We have to make a choice between playing social soccer and competitive soccer.

If we choose to play social soccer, then there is not a need for us to attend training sessions, engage a coach and the result should not affect any of us. Everybody would get equal chance to play at least one half of the match.

If we choose to play competitive soccer, then there IS a need for us to attend training sessions, engage a qualified coach, beef up the squad with the best players and have to do our best to achieve the best result. However, this choice would result in a team fielding their best 11 and only replacing them when the situation arises.

The teams that pulled out from the league were playing social football. It resulted in players not putting their hearts to the team and ended up in the teams having to withdraw due to lack of players. They have to fund the matches themselves which resulted in players not coming for the matches when they are broke. There was no goal and aim and therefore, no commitment.

We have already committed to the ESPZEN league as a platform to showcase our club. We have committed individuals and players who strive to bring this club to another level. I brought in new players, a coach, source for sponsorship, head hunting for committed management officials and getting involved in an established league setup not for the sake of playng social soccer.

If we choose to play social soccer, then we should not get involved in the league and just arrange a match when we feel like it. I believe all our efforts would go to waste if we fail to realise our aim and goal.

Maybe after the end of the league, we could make two teams, one for social football and the other for competitive football.

Match Update ..Sunday, 3 July 2005 vs Ale Vasco

Sigh...as I update my blog, it is with mixed emotions. Today, all the players played well, but we were let down by major errors by a few of our players. Although I have always instill the philosophy of winning and losing as a team, I cant but feel let down by a few of our players. I will not go into details, as I am not the type to bad mouth my players. What is sad is that a few players fail to acknowledge their mistake and were rude (in my opinion) to Wak when he pointed out their mistakes. Wak, being passionate about football, was frustrated about the major mistakes that resulted in the opponent equalising and the match ending in a draw (4-4)

As the President, I am responsible for the team. I have to map out what is needed for us to win the league and for the future of the club. I DO NOT CONDONE RUDENESS TO THE OFFICIALS OF THE TEAM, especially to someone who has a vast experience in football such as Wak. Even if these players do not agree with Wak's opinion, at least they could reflect on their mistakes for awhile and not say anything. When the time is right, these players could talk to Wak their side of the story.

Nevertheless, I do feel Wak's anger was warranted. How could it not be when we were domintaing the match. Many of the players felt let down. If there was not enough team spirit within this team, there would definitely be anger and resentment within the squad. Luckily, everybody was willing to forgive and forget about the incident.

To all the other players, obviously you guys played your hearts out. To those who were unable to play the full 80 minutes, do understand the situation the team is in. If we win the league, rest assured that you will have your chance. To Gary, Kourosh and Saw, your time will come....

Lets stick together and focus on our next match. This team have no room for cry babies...this team only have room for men who will pick themselves up and learn from their mistakes, and work hard to amend them.

Have a good Sunday and see you guys in training...

BTW...our 'resident photographer' was unable to make it due to family commitments.

I shed a tear....

Today, I looked at the blog and how great it was to see pictures of the players. I thanked God for giving this team the spirit to succeed, for sending me the committed individuals who have kept my hopes alive...and for allowing me to have a woman whom have always supported my passion for the club.

With the inspiratioanl Contender theme song playing in the background, I have this strong belief that we are the contenders for the Morning League. To all those who have supported me...Peter, Richard, Faizal, Fuad, Fariq, Tommy, Botak and the other individuals whom I have not mentioned..I am grateful..

To Wak Ansari, thank you for instilling me with football wisdom, I am a proud son of a truly respectable coach.

To Kimmy, I could never have done all this without you....LOVE YOU
